Cost of Fiji’s Presidency of COP23 revealed

The PM seated next to the UNFCCC executive secretary  Patricia Espinosa in Bonn(1)The cost of Fiji’s Presidency of the COP23 negotiations to be held in Germany has been revealed.

According to the COP 23 Presidency budget, it will cost an estimated $26. 7 million USD or $55. 7 million FJD.

The budget outlines in detail the expenses of the COP 23 Presidency which includes international outreach, meetings and travel expenses.

According to the COP 23 Budget, the intersessional meetings and Presidency support for the Prime Minister is $1. 9 million, the Chief Negotiator $970,000, Climate Champion $670,000 and for the Attorney General who is the Climate Change Minister $550,000 while for the Climate Ambassador $130,000.

The Presidency support and administration which involves attendance at support events with the Prime Minister , the Attorney General, Chief Negotiator, Climate Champion and Climate Ambassador in total is $630,000.

Government has established a COP 23 Trust fund to receive monies from donors, foundations and other States parties to the Convention to finance the performance of the State’s role as President of COP 23, to ensure the success of the State in its role as President of COP 23.

The Trust Fund is to provide funding to assist programmes, projects and activities associated with or arising out of the COP 23 Presidency and which may include addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation activities under the
Paris Agreement and any other climate change related purpose approved by the Minister responsible for climate change

Australia and New Zealand are the latest to give funding towards Fiji’s Presidency of COP 23

The Australia government has announced $6 million AUD or more than $9 million FJD towards Fiji’s Presidency , New Zealand is providing $1. 87 million.

The Chinese government has provided $224,000 FJD, the European Union is providing $6. 5 million FJD to support Fiji

The Asian Development Bank is investing $3. 1 million FJD to assist Fiji’s Presidency.

The German government is hosting the conference in Bonn and is picking up the cost of doing so – some 70-million Euros or $155 million FJD.
