The defense lawyer for alleged serial rapist and accused murderer Josua Colanaudolu maintains he did not rape and murder the 14 year old girl in Deuba last year. The Suva High court this morning heard the final submission from the defense counsel.
Addressing the assessors Colanaudolu’s lawyer Michael Fesaitu stated that he was at home sleeping on the day the body of the 14 year old girl was found on the beach in Deuba.
Fesaitu told the court that Colanaudolu was sleep deprived from drinking the day before and was at home during the time of the murder. He says Colanaudolu only found out about the death of the 14 year old girl when his wife woke him to relay the news.
He says what hurts the most is being accused for something he did not do. Fatiaki added the 3 rape accusations were all made up and that he is innocent.
Meanwhile prosecutor Lee Burney told the court that if the 14 year old girl had not died, the 3 rape incidents would have been swept away.
Burney commended the victims for taking the stand as they spoke out for themselves however the 14 year old who was killed was not able to speak up for herself.
The prosecutors believe that Colanaudolu knew what he was doing and also lied throughout his trial.
Burney said the accused lied about the doctor’s exam reports, he lied about the police mistreating him and that he slept through the night of the incident.
He said according to eye witness who knew Colanaudolu, saw him walking around on the night of the murder.
Burney told the assessors that he had a weak alibi and that Colanaudolu made a wild allegation that everyone was lying except him.
Colanaudolu is facing one count of murder, 6 counts of rape, 4 counts of abduction and one count of indecently annoying a female.
The charges also include the case where Colanaudolu allegedly abducted, raped and murdered a 14-year-old girl in Deuba in March last year.
