A young couple of Vunisea village in Ra have lost their six weeks old baby boy, 10 hours after he was given two injections at a health center.
Distraught mother Raijeli Marama Naisake is hoping the health ministry will carry out an investigation to find out what happened.
The baby was taken to the Tokaimalo Health Centre yesterday morning for a scheduled check-up.
The family say the baby was healthy since birth and didn’t have any complications.
The mother explained what happened at the health center yesterday.
The mother says they discovered the baby was dead when she wanted to breast-feed the baby early this morning.
The dead baby was brought here to the Rakiraki hospital – a post mortem will be carried out tomorrow in Lautoka before results are released to the family.
The Ministry of Health has this afternoon responded stating that while they are naturally saddened by any death, especially the death of a child, they cannot discuss the details of an individual patient’s care with a third party until they have the patient’s consent.
The Ministry states in this case, as in all such cases, they will contact the patient, conduct a thorough investigation and provide a response to the patient. If they then choose to share that information with the media they are, of course, at liberty to do so.
