The National Disaster Management Office is advising the general public to exercise caution, as a heavy rain alert remains in force for the Central and Eastern parts of Fiji.

With occasional rain increasing to period of rain, heavy at times with squally thunderstorms, a Heavy Rain Warning is in force for Eastern half of Vitilevu, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Vanualevu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.

For the rest of Fiji, a Heavy Rain Alert is now in force and occasional rain with few thunderstorms can be expected and isolated heavy falls likely.

Rainfall in the Eastern and Central Division is anticipated to be enhanced by easterly wind flow, which increases the chance of heavy rain and flooding of low-lying areas along the major rivers.

Therefore, flood alerts have been upgraded to Flood Warning for the low-lying areas adjacent to and downstream of Waimanu River.

Pedestrians and motorists are advised to refrain from walking or driving through floodwaters.

Though shallow and still in appearance, floodwaters may be deeper and faster flowing and may contain dangerous debris. Flooding can also erode or wash away road surfaces creating potholes or uneven surfaces which may not be visible.

Parents and teachers are advised to monitor whereabouts of children at all times and to keep them away from flooded drains or waterways.

As an act of preparedness, be certain about the location of your nearest evacuation center. If unsure about your nearest evacuation center, contact your District Officer, District Advisory Councillor or village headman.

Members of the public can contact the Fiji Roads Authority by phone on 5720 to enquire about affected roads and crossings.
