Issues in relation to supply of building materials for the Help for homes initiative has been addressed progressively over the past few weeks
This is according to the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed – Khaiyum.
As supply normalizes, government is preparing to roll out the second batch of the Help for Home initiative.
The second batch of the Help for Home initiative will cost Government about $20 million.
“We believe that a number of the blockages that were there in respect of the short supply has been addressed progressively over the past few weeks” said Sayed – Khaiyum
Priority areas have been classified as the red zone.
“The Ministry of Social Welfare will be going out with her team and identifying areas within the red zone that had not received the cards”
The Help for Homes initiative is designed to give affected households the resources they need to rebuild their damaged homes, including roofs, to withstand severe weather events.
Homes that have sustained damage from Cyclone Winston have been issued electronic cards that can be used at selected hardware retailers to purchase materials to rebuild.
“The people who have received the card obviously have the money on the cards, there are some people who had placed their orders using the cards and the orders weren’t fulfilled because of the fact there were shortage so once the supply comes in, they’ll get access to the materials so it’ll be a wastage of their money if they don’t use that material” said Sayed – Khaiyum.
Currently, the help for home initiative has cost Government $88 million.
