Nine men who raped and sexually assaulted robbery suspects Vilikesa Soko and Senijieli Boila were dished out jail sentences this afternoon.
In a jam-packed court room in Lautoka, Justice Aruna Aluthge told the 8 suspended police officers and a military officer that no one was above the law and that they had failed badly in their duties.
Manasa Talala and Seruvi Caqusau have been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment with a non- parole period of 5 years.
Kelevi Sewatu, Penaia Drauna and Senitiki Natakasavu were sentenced to 7 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 4 years.
While Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu and Pita Matairavula have been sentenced to 9 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 6 years.
Defense Lawyer Iqbal Khan requested for all accused to be taken into Police custody tonight and transported to the correctional facility tomorrow for their safety.
However, Prosecution strongly objected to the request and the Judge also refused saying their sentences were effective immediately.
