A religious leader and former Trade Unionist has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption today on allegations of Abuse of Office related offences.
Kamlesh Arya was in FICAC custody and was earlier this afternoon produced at the Suva Magistrates Court.
He has been charged with one count of Abuse of Office and a count of General Dishonesty – Causing A Loss.
The allegation dates back to 2014 where FICAC alleges that Arya while being employed in the public service as the Registrar of the University of Fiji, and while acting as the School Manager for Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School, Arya did an arbitrary act for gain in abuse of the authority of his office.
Its alleged Arya authorized loans amounting to $116,500 from the Free Education Grant provided by the Ministry of Education to Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School which was prejudicial to the rights of the Ministry of Education and Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School.
Arya has sought to engage a private lawyer.
He is ordered to report to the Lautoka FICAC office once every week, and has been released
on bail.
His surety was his brother Sunil Arya and his friend Agni Deo Singh, amount set at $5000 and he has surrendered his travel documents.
Arya will reappear in court on the 13th of December where he will have the opportunity to elect a court.
