And another taxi driver under the spotlight.
A 39-year-old man of Nausori has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for driving his taxi in a reckless manner and causing the death of a man.
Subarmani Goundar was convicted of a count each of manslaughter, failure to supply breath analysis to an officer and failure to comply with requirements following an accident.
Subramani Goundar will now have to pay the price for his wreck-less driving which caused the death of 35-year-old Sairusi Vunakece.
The incident happened on the 29th April of 2016 in Vuci Road Nausori.
While reading out his sentence Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo highlighted that Goundar was drunk and speeding during the night of the incident.
Justice Temo stated that police officers tried to stop him but Goundar kept speeding, turned off his headlights and later hit a man with his taxi.
He said Goundar’s actions was reckless and below the standard of taxi drivers, he killed someone and so he must not complain when his liberty will be taken away.
Justice Temo says that Goundar was also rebellious to police officers and he does not deserve to be a taxi driver.
The Judge said that Goundar had caused heartache to the wife and six children of Sairusi Vunakece.
Justice Temo has fixed a non parole period of seven years and also disqualified Goundar from holding or obtaining a drivers license for two years.
