A man in his 30’s appeared at the Suva Magistrates court this afternoon facing charges relating to the rape of a girl in November last year at Toorak in Suva.
Josefa Voligadra took almost an hour to understand the charges against him.
He made it difficult for the court and numerous times he told the Magistrate that he could not understand the charges read out to him.
He is charged with one count of Rape and one count of Assault with intend to Rape.
The charges were read to him in the i-taukei language however Voligadra said he did not know what the case was about.
Magistrate Waleen George asked the prosecutor if the accused had psychiatric issues.
The prosecutor and the Magistrate then proceeded to reconfirm his name and place of birth, to which the accused responded correctly.
The Magistrate then transferred the matter to the High Court.
